6 Reasons Why Competition is Great For Business

In today’s DJ world, there is an ever-growing amount of competition. It seems as if new DJs and DJ companies pop up every month. Additionally, the wedding and private event business in general, seems to attract new people, every year, too. It seems as if every month, we work with a new photographer, a new planner, or we hear of a new venue. Although we are in the Austin/central Texas market, which is a huge wedding market.

Today, becoming a DJ, is much easier than it used to be. The more DJs there are, the competitive it becomes to book your events. This is great for consumers, of course, but it can also be good for your business, too! Here’s how.

  1. Room for Growth – If you feel as though you’re the “best” out there and have no room to grow or learn anything new, you’re hurting your business. When you’re the only one in your market, and have no competition, you become complacent. Always challenge yourself to do more and become better. Competition can wake you up and help you improve!
  2. Standing Out – When you have competition, you have to find a way to stand out and be better than your competition. You have to find a way to be the authority in what you do. You must be innovative and stay ahead of your competition. Show your clients why you’re different and more importantly, the best choice.
  3. Trending Now: You – Having a lot of competition means there’s a demand for what you do. Be innovative and offer new, exciting things that no one else does, and you’ll win! Clients always want to have a unique experience. In a way, even couples and clients are somewhat competitive and want to have a different wedding/event (everyone wants to top the last wedding/event they went to). Clients won’t come out and say that they want a better wedding or event, but they do. Although we’ve had clients say “we want it to be better than my friend’s wedding,” or “we want more entertainment, more things to do,” etc. Businesses always tell us, “we want to top last year’s event!”
  4. Know Your Competition – You should always know your competition and more importantly, why you’re better or how you’re improving to be better. Watch what they do because believe me, they’re also watching you. Are they charging much more or less than you? If so, why? Learn what your competitors are doing and how you can apply it to your business.
  5. Find Your Niche – Whether you like it or not, someone will ALWAYS be better than you, cheaper than you, more expensive than you, and be different than you. This is perfectly fine. Accept it! Find your niche and narrow down your competition in that niche. When you narrow down your niche, you can become truly competitive in that niche and dominate!
  6. Customers First, Always – Overall, you can’t be too focused on competitors and always trying to “one-up” them. We had a client once tell us that another DJ company emailed them after they already booked with us and offered to do it for $100 less than whatever we charged. I was surprised, and baffled, too. Why would they simply focus on price and choose to be booked because they were cheaper? What if I offered to do their event for $100? 🙂

Focus, instead, on what truly matters, which is your clients and delivering the best experience possible, every time. Rent My Wedding can help you get the competitive edge, without costing a fortune. You can rent all the lighting you need, a photo booth, or anything else that will truly wow your clients! Your clients are the reason you’re booked, and not your competitors. Remember that!

Top 25 Wedding Reception Songs

There are many great DJ song lists out there. Simply doing a Google search will yield millions of results! So how do you narrow it down? The answer isn’t too simply, but here’s my best advice. Every DJ has his/her own preferred “go-to” songs, and the top songs that are played may also vary by region. Our company, Austin’s Best DJs, is based out of Austin, Texas, and we provide DJs and photo booths for about 250 events per year. Around 80% of our events are weddings. We tend to play many of the same songs at many of the weddings we do. We don’t play them because we’re too lazy to make a new playlist; we play them because they work! A hit is a hit and people want to hear and dance to songs they know and love. Your job, as a DJ, is to ensure that your clients and their guests have a great time! We know there are literally millions of songs out there and there may be some great songs that we left out, but these are the well know songs that we frequently play at weddings. That being said, here is our list of the top 25 upbeat, fun songs that get people dancing!

  1. “Shout” – Isley Brothers
  2. “Twist” – Chubby Checker
  3. “Twist and Shout” – The Beatles
  4. “Uptown Funk” – Bruno Mars
  5. “I Gotta Feeling” – The Black Eyed Peas
  6. “Can’t Stop the Feeling” – Justin Timberlake
  7. “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” – Whitney Houston
  8. “September” – Earth, Wind and Fire
  9. “Yeah” – Usher
  10. “Don’t Stop Believing” – Journey
  11. “Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough” – Michael Jackson
  12. “Cupid Shuffle” – Cupid
  13. “Wobble” – VIC
  14. “Hey Ya” – Outkast
  15. “Kiss” – Prince
  16. “Shut Up and Dance” – Walk the Moon
  17. “This is How We Do It” – Montell Jordan
  18. “Sweet Caroline” – Neil Diamond
  19. “Blurred Lines” – Robin Thicke
  20. “Low” – Flo Rida
  21. “We Are Family” – Sister Sledge
  22. “Play That Funky Music” – Wild Cherry
  23. “Love Shack” – The B-52’s
  24. “Friends in Low Places” – Garth Brooks
  25. “Respect” – Aretha Franklin

Overall, these songs are great; however, you should always discuss your song list with your couple, to see what their preferences are, first. If they prefer different genres or aren’t too picky, the above songs are great go-to songs to build your playlist around. Again, there are hundreds more that we play, but these are the most played songs in our library, for weddings. The above songs usually pack the dance floor at weddings here in the Austin and central Texas area; however, these songs are great hits and should pack dance floors all over the country!

Lighting 101 for Grad Night!

As summer quickly approaches, the first wave of Class of 2017 graduates will be celebrating the big day with food, festivities, family and friends! We are INSPIRED by all the unique touches our clients have added to their graduation parties!

Uplighting truly changes the ambiance of a room, and it creates a double “wow” effect when combined with gobo monogram lighting. Adding a custom design touch to the gobo, such as a grad cap, the graduate’s silhouette, or a cartoon of the graduate, makes all the difference in making the party especially memorable to the new alumni and guests alike. Even the combination of one accent uplight and gobo lighting creates a world’s difference!

Enchanted Forest Theme Prom

We just LOVE the enchanted forest theme for prom. Here’s a look at how you can create this theme in any room using lighting.

starrynight

Our clients used uplighting, blisslights and gobos to create this amazing look. To create the forest scene on the wall, they used gobo lighting with a moon and tree shadows. Blisslights were used to create a starry night sky on the ceiling and wall. They also used a gobo to put the prom theme message in lights. Guests were amazed at how the lighting really made it feel like they were stepping into an enchanted forest! As a finishing touch, our clients used yellow and blue uplighting to add a glow of color to ice sculptures. It was definitely a night to remember!

Up-selling With Uplighting

One thing that can really take a wedding to the next level is uplighting. Our friends at Austin’s Best DJs have some great tips on how DJs can use uplighting to earn extra profits. Read on to learn more!

In the DJ business, DJs and DJ companies should always strive to find new ways to increase sales and profits. There are a number of ways to increase sales, such as having packages, offering optional upgrades, adding extra time for your clients, and many other ways. One of the easiest ways to up-sell and increase your profits is to add uplighting to your packages or options.
uplights
Uplighting looks great and is easy to set up, too. A room’s atmosphere can be completely changed by simply adding great uplighting. For weddings and Quinceaneras, allow your couples to choose which color(s) they want. They’ll most likely want a color that matches their theme. For other events, you can inform your clients of which colors will look the best. Most clients choose one color, but we’ve had other clients choose two or three different colors to match their theme. You definitely want to have a few great examples to show your clients, while offering the uplighting. As they say, “a picture is worth a thousand words,” so be sure to have several pictures on your website, social media, or at least in your phone, so they can see exactly how great their event will look! Everyone wants to “wow” their guests, and this is another easy way to do it!

gala
There are a variety of uplights that you can purchase, from different companies. You also have the option to buy wired or wireless uplights. If you want to minimize setup time, use the LED uplights that do not need a DMX controller to change the colors. Many uplights will not hold the particular color you set, if the DMX controller is unplugged, so it’s best to get the uplights that do not need to be plugged into a DMX controller. To further minimize set-up time, use wireless uplights, so you avoid having to find enough power outlets, bringing multiple extension cords, DMX cables, etc. Wireless uplights are great and are a huge time-saver!
If you can’t decide on which lights to purchase, or you’re not quite ready to take the plunge and buy eight or more uplights, there is a solution! You can always simply rent uplights! RentMyWedding offers a great deal on uplights. It’s very convenient and cost-effective to rent them as it gives you a chance to add-on uplighting without a worry about storage. You can rent wired or wireless uplights, without having to spend a lot. You can easily build the cost of your rental and time, into your price, so you still make a profit. Overall, having the option to up-sell and add uplighting to your packages will definitely increase your profits!

Real Event: Throwback Anniversary Gala!

For the 50th Anniversary Metropolitan Anniversary Gala in Washington, D.C., the hosts brainstormed quite a fun idea for this years theme – a trip through time. This was the perfect way to commemorate their 50 years, and the theme was brought to life with exquisite lighting and unique prop decorations!

The gala took place at the Metropolitan Nursery School. The school was completely transformed with turquoise uplighting. The gallery was creatively decorated with items from different decades, ranging from the 1960s to the 2000s. Near the gallery, a corkboard was covered with a collage of personal images.

From the gala to the reception hall, guests savored a delicious array of hors d’oeuvres and dessert treats. Inside the reception hall, there was a large floral centerpiece highlighted with centerpiece spotlights. This was really the show-stopper and created such a dramatic focal point! Guests chatted around the tables, enjoyed a few treats, and watched a live jazz performance by The Conservation Class Jazz Band.

At the end of the night, take-home chocolate bars commemorating the celebration were also available for those sweet tooth guests. It was definitely a stunning and wonderful anniversary!
