Lighting 101 for Grad Night!

As summer quickly approaches, the first wave of Class of 2017 graduates will be celebrating the big day with food, festivities, family and friends! We are INSPIRED by all the unique touches our clients have added to their graduation parties!

Uplighting truly changes the ambiance of a room, and it creates a double “wow” effect when combined with gobo monogram lighting. Adding a custom design touch to the gobo, such as a grad cap, the graduate’s silhouette, or a cartoon of the graduate, makes all the difference in making the party especially memorable to the new alumni and guests alike. Even the combination of one accent uplight and gobo lighting creates a world’s difference!

Upgrade Your DJ Lighting, Today!

As a DJ, one thing is for sure: you have to always invest in your business! You can’t simply buy your DJ setup and then be done. Things wear out over time and you have to have backup equipment, new cords/cables, and lighting! It seems like new and better DJ lighting comes out every few months! It’s hard to keep up and get the latest, greatest new lights every time they come out. Luckily, there’s a solution!

You can find several different types of lights, available for rent, that won’t break the bank. You can get water effect lighting, pin spots (spot lights), moving head dance floor lighting (party spotlight), black lighting, texture lighting, uplighting, monogram lighting, and many more! You can rent your entire lighting package, if needed! This works great if you don’t have the money to buy all these lights, which can literally add up to thousands of dollars. Rent My Wedding, a leading event lighting rental company, has pretty reasonable pricing on all their lights and you get free shipping, both ways. It couldn’t be any easier.

All of these lights can be an optional upgrade that you add to your DJ packages. Simply price them on RMW and then add however much you want to charge for your time, to build in your profit! Uplighting and monogram lighting can really change the atmosphere at any event! Many weddings have a theme color. Talk to your client and let them know about all of your optional upgrades. Be sure to have some pictures and/or video of what each light looks like. Brides always picture themselves on how their wedding day will look. The more upgrades you offer, the more money you’ll make!

The best thing about renting lighting is that you can always rent lighting as needed. For bar/club DJs, this is perfect! Club DJs may never need lighting at their bar events, but when you do the occasional private event, you’ll need lighting. There’s no need to invest a ton of money for the occasional use. Now, you can offer the professional lighting and look just as good as the other guys out there, for a fraction of the price! RMW is the perfect solution for these DJs and for private event DJs who want to still offer many upgrades and also don’t want to invest thousands of dollars at one time!

Planning Your Uplighting Placement

If you’re having a wedding, party or event, and you want to change up the venue’s atmosphere, consider uplighting! Uplighting can really change an entire room’s atmosphere! If you have a theme or color for your event, think about adding the same colors, or colors that go well with your theme. Placing a few lights around the room can really do wonders for the look of your event! So just where should you place the lights? Let’s discuss the ideal placement and details!

Before placing your lighting in the room, remember to consider power outlets, if you’re using wired uplights. This is where wireless uplights really come in handy! You’re not restricted to a certain area and don’t have to mess with the hassle of extension cords! So if it’s in your budget, add wireless uplights! Now, let’s get to the placement.

white - uplighting

First, consider the size of the room and where your guests will be seated, as well as where your head table will be and where the dance floor will be. Some venues have larger rooms with everything taking place in one area. Other venues have different rooms for dinner, cocktail hour, and the reception/dance. Regardless of the venue, uplighting is sure to add to the atmosphere. In my opinion, uplighting looks great anywhere, but it’s best in key areas and corners.

Always place even numbered lights on the wall you’re accenting. It looks better to have pairs of lights, rather than an odd number. The first place to accent is the head table area. Place at least two, but feel free to add as many as you’d like, near the head table. We recommend 2-4 lights in this area. This is the focal point of the room, so highlight this with lighting. Next, place lighting near other important areas, such as the cake table, dessert bar, sign-in table, etc. Once you’ve highlighted these areas, there should be much more color throughout the room! If you still wish to add color and lighting, feel free to now place them along each wall of the room, in even numbers. The lights also look great in corners, too! If you’re outdoors, try lighting the trees, too! It looks great at night!

This placement info is what we use for our events, all year long. Most brides and grooms ask us to decide where to place the lighting, but some have had their own ideas, as well. There’s no standard placement, so feel free to use this as a guide, and add or change what best fits your venue and event!

Enchanted Forest Theme Prom

We just LOVE the enchanted forest theme for prom. Here’s a look at how you can create this theme in any room using lighting.

starrynight

Our clients used uplighting, blisslights and gobos to create this amazing look. To create the forest scene on the wall, they used gobo lighting with a moon and tree shadows. Blisslights were used to create a starry night sky on the ceiling and wall. They also used a gobo to put the prom theme message in lights. Guests were amazed at how the lighting really made it feel like they were stepping into an enchanted forest! As a finishing touch, our clients used yellow and blue uplighting to add a glow of color to ice sculptures. It was definitely a night to remember!

Up-selling With Uplighting

One thing that can really take a wedding to the next level is uplighting. Our friends at Austin’s Best DJs have some great tips on how DJs can use uplighting to earn extra profits. Read on to learn more!

In the DJ business, DJs and DJ companies should always strive to find new ways to increase sales and profits. There are a number of ways to increase sales, such as having packages, offering optional upgrades, adding extra time for your clients, and many other ways. One of the easiest ways to up-sell and increase your profits is to add uplighting to your packages or options.

Uplighting looks great and is easy to set up, too. A room’s atmosphere can be completely changed by simply adding great uplighting. For weddings and Quinceaneras, allow your couples to choose which color(s) they want. They’ll most likely want a color that matches their theme. For other events, you can inform your clients of which colors will look the best. Most clients choose one color, but we’ve had other clients choose two or three different colors to match their theme. You definitely want to have a few great examples to show your clients, while offering the uplighting. As they say, “a picture is worth a thousand words,” so be sure to have several pictures on your website, social media, or at least in your phone, so they can see exactly how great their event will look! Everyone wants to “wow” their guests, and this is another easy way to do it!

gala
There are a variety of uplights that you can purchase, from different companies. You also have the option to buy wired or wireless uplights. If you want to minimize setup time, use the LED uplights that do not need a DMX controller to change the colors. Many uplights will not hold the particular color you set, if the DMX controller is unplugged, so it’s best to get the uplights that do not need to be plugged into a DMX controller. To further minimize set-up time, use wireless uplights, so you avoid having to find enough power outlets, bringing multiple extension cords, DMX cables, etc. Wireless uplights are great and are a huge time-saver!
If you can’t decide on which lights to purchase, or you’re not quite ready to take the plunge and buy eight or more uplights, there is a solution! You can always simply rent uplights! RentMyWedding offers a great deal on uplights. It’s very convenient and cost-effective to rent them as it gives you a chance to add-on uplighting without a worry about storage. You can rent wired or wireless uplights, without having to spend a lot. You can easily build the cost of your rental and time, into your price, so you still make a profit. Overall, having the option to up-sell and add uplighting to your packages will definitely increase your profits!

Real Event: Throwback Anniversary Gala!

For the 50th Anniversary Metropolitan Anniversary Gala in Washington, D.C., the hosts brainstormed quite a fun idea for this years theme – a trip through time. This was the perfect way to commemorate their 50 years, and the theme was brought to life with exquisite lighting and unique prop decorations!

The gala took place at the Metropolitan Nursery School. The school was completely transformed with turquoise uplighting. The gallery was creatively decorated with items from different decades, ranging from the 1960s to the 2000s. Near the gallery, a corkboard was covered with a collage of personal images.

From the gala to the reception hall, guests savored a delicious array of hors d’oeuvres and dessert treats. Inside the reception hall, there was a large floral centerpiece highlighted with centerpiece spotlights. This was really the show-stopper and created such a dramatic focal point! Guests chatted around the tables, enjoyed a few treats, and watched a live jazz performance by The Conservation Class Jazz Band.

At the end of the night, take-home chocolate bars commemorating the celebration were also available for those sweet tooth guests. It was definitely a stunning and wonderful anniversary!
